If you would like to go to dinner and have some good hibachi grilled food and sushi, there are few places that can compare to this. The restaurant offers a great dining experience with a mix of Chinese and Japanese cooking. The hibachi chef was entertaining, but I noticed it was very much like he was going through a routine, and gave me the impression he was bored, and uninterested. He was definitely skilled, and the food was very good, but a smile now and then would have been nice to see. Overall I liked the food and the atmosphere, and I would go there again if I was in the area.

Kind of expensive for mediocre Asian cuisine at best. The service was alright and staff seemed to be on top of their game. Was really enthralled with the General Tso's chicken, it was heavenly, but tasted stale... not sure what caused it but it was just regular food, no worst than the asian food I had at away at school.

The atmosphere was amazing. They show that they care about their customers. They quickly whipped up a new meal for me. I will go back 100 more times. Thank you Britney and Julie.

The food here was terrible. The shrimp fried rice smelled horrible as though the fish had been left at room temperature all day. The Kung pow chicken smelled like an ashtray. It wasn't even Kung pow chicken. It was some sort of burned concoction that was completely inedible. The soup was cold and by the time I tried to eat the spring roll I just threw everything away. I spent $35 for soup, egg rolls, shrimp fried rice and Kung pow chicken. All of which I threw away outside because of the horrid stench and foul taste. I would never recommend this place, ever.

I am sad that I have to give this place three stars because some of the other reviews were so good. I had sweet and sour shrimp, and my partner had Jan Bon (ok I don't know how to spell it.) Hers was good, but it wasn't spiced properly. The sauce on my sweet and sour shrimp was great, the rice was nice, the little sushi handroll we had was lovely. But they left the poop vein in my shrimp. I am kind of a sissy about these sort of things, and I just couldn't eat it! Everything else was pretty good, however; I'd like to go back and avoid shrimp to see if I'm happier. The place itself is clean, tidy, and slightly upscale, and the service was great. It's just the little shrimp vein. Eeewoo.

This is my fave place for take-out. Food is always great, though sometimes it's better than others, but always good. Chalk it up to diff peeps in the kitchen. Best crab Rangoon ever. And good eggrolls. Have never tried their sushi, but will next time.

Food was excellent and entertainment was kool. Evan our chief was funny, polite, and fixed our food as desired. I'll be back!

I've been here twice- once on the Chinese/sushi side, and once on the Japanese/Hibachi side. The first time was Chinese/Sushi, it was about a year ago, so I don't remember details- but we were really impressed with the quality of the food and the ambiance. I would give it 4 stars. That led us to go back to try the Hibachi side last week, which is a favorite special meal experience of ours, but since moving to the midwest, is kind of hard to find in good quality. I would rate the Japanese/Hibachi 2 stars (hence the averaged rating of 3). The soup was not good, as others have said. The salad, usually a highlight of the meal because we love ginger dressing, was not up to par either. When the chef arrived, he was very personable and we were looking forward to the "show." But he immediately dropped his utensils during the first minute or so...and proceeded to stumble through the rest of the first few minutes of the cooking/performance, dropping/breaking the eggs too early, and generally the whole thing was pretty sloppy. I thought maybe it was just our chef, but then a chef nearby lost control of his spatula and it landed on my companion's lap, spilling soy sauce all over our table. I continued to watch other chefs during our meal, and it seemed like they were all quite sloppy as well. The food was just not very good. The beef and scallops were both chewy and rubbery, the shrimp bland, and the fried rice overcooked.

This is a nice combination restaurant of calm Chinese ambience and then the Japanese hibachi grill. This family knows how to cook! I used to go to shanghai gardens in the cascade area; it closed and I was very upset for years because I didn't know that shanghai ichiban was the same family/food. I was very happy to realize that we could get most of our old favorites at this place. Prices are very reasonable with great quality food. Crab Rangoon is the good kind with green onion. Favorite dishes are General Tso chicken, Orange beef, and double delight pork. There are many other good dishes, too. Soups are good; egg roll is different...prob the thing I like the least. Std rice is fried rice, no up charge. Pleasant staff. They care about the product they are serving everyone and the quality and price is so worth it.

Initial seating was confusing - we chose Chinese side - and so glad we did. Service was over the top - food was fresh & delicious! We all loved out meals including sushi!

I was hoping to take the family to an authentic Japanese restaurant...however, I believe this restaurant is more Chinese than Japanese. Also, I arrived for lunch and the Hibachi hours on the weekends are limited. We ended up leaving and going elsewhere as they told us they didn't offer any Japanese dishes during lunch.

Went for a 4 day trip to GrandRapids,Michigan to visit my best friend from High School, Evelyn. Now married to a very succesful Neurologist , 2 children, 1 grandchild and a beautiful house on the lake. She cooked me two of our favorite filipino dishes called"pinakbet" mixed vegetables ,bittermelon, eggplant, okra, longbeans w/ shrimps cooked in fish sauce and Sinigang, Milkfish belly cooked in tamarind with spinach..so good. After having a delicious home made meal for lunch ..we went out to dinner to try the Japanese Hibachi .....Food Prepared and cooked before your eyes at the Hibachi table..Grilling is a great way to make authentic Japanese Food....With all the tricks with the knifes It really takes an expert chef to master the art of showmanship while cooking your meal. Very entertaining indeed...All of us ordered the Lobster Hibachi combo. with fried rice....and mixed vegetables of onions, mushrooms, carrots, beansprouts ..everything cooked on our table. It has been a very memorable experience. ... The staff was great...all dressed in Japanese kimono...they were all very pleasant and attentive to your every need. They sure know how to please a customer...The indoor atmosphere was great..with the man made pool and bridge with waterfalls...nice ambience!!!

First, if you're looking for Chinese food, go eat somewhere else. If you're looking for entertainment with a meal, come to Shanghai Ichiban for some good 'ole hibachi. They put on a show, albiet the same show every time you dine, making it a fun atmosphere as you wait for your meal to cook. On the menu, I usually stick with the chicken, or steak and shrimp meal . Make sure you try the "yolk", which is a cheesy-egg sauce the chef can place on your meal. For me, that yolk is what makes the meal complete. The service is good, not great every time. But like I said, the entertainment value alone (even watching another table's chef) makes up for any moments of playing "where's our waitress?" Overally, good hibachi food, okay chinese food, haven't tried the sushi. Fun times, check it out.

Didn't end up eating here based on my walk in for a sushi menu. First off WHO THE HELL MIXES CHINESE/JAPANESE restaurants together? This place is having an identity crisis! I'm sorry but that's not how it works... So I asked the gal up front for a sushi menu and handed me a piece of paper cut in half. I'm pretty sure there were 9 things total of the list. OH ps- they weren't anything fun or exciting... So I went to Sushi Kuni.
(1)Matt F.
Awesome place, the best asian cuisine in Grand Rapids. They cook right in front of you, and the cooks are very personable! If you like Hibachi, you need to check this place out!
(5)Scott T.
Great value, excellent food, professional wait staff. You just can't go wrong here. Highly recommended.
(5)Eric Y.
So, I'm from Chicago but I went to Grand Rapids for an event. We have plenty of hibachi in chicago, but wow this place was unique. Not only was the food AMAZING, but the decor was gorgeous. They have a little creek with fish when you walk torward the hibachi-side. I had the filet and golden shrimp, but were cooked perfectly and went well with the rice and vegetables. If you live in Grand Rapids, you've probably already been there. If you are visiting, I highly recommend it!
(5)Dave J.
If your friends say you live in Bland Rapids, don't take them here. Not that it isn't good, it just is missing an authentic Japanese touch. I've been to Japan and know the difference. First off, they have a chinese restaurant and a japanese hibachi/takanyaki. My wife and kids went there for a birthday celebration, so of course we picked hibachi. The meals were from $14 to $25ish, with special combo meals for even more. But even with the veggies, my daughter chose, you got shrimp on the side, and plenty to eat. As another review pointed out, the soup and salad course was not with miso soup. The salad was damp iceberg lettuce and a weak ginger dressing. My son said it was spicy, but I've tasted better. Whether these are short-cuts, or for local tastes, I'll let you judge. All the standard hibachi restaurant theater you would expect, which the kids enjoyed, but the chef was a bit more business-like in getting things cooked, and I didn't feel it was a 'show' like I've seen before. Our plates filled very fast with food, rather than courses. Of course the food was good, crisp, and hot. I had the prawns dinner which came with a side of sliced scallops, fried rice, and fried veggies. A bit heavy on the soy sauce and oil, which also seems typical of this type of cooking. There was plenty to take home. We also ordered some sushi, which arrived while the chef was starting to cook, so not a lot of time to eat it. Plus there was so much other food, the expense wasn't worth it. Good sushi, but no sushi-bar in site. Japanese beers were $7 each, and I recommend the Asahi Super Dry. The kids really enjoyed it (they are 12, 14), but compared to what I like (authentic, exotic, aromatic), this wasn't my favorite choice. And a bit expensive for taking kids, even the kids menu items were $13. Others mentioned the atmosphere, and the fish are cool, but it looks a little dated compared to the place by Rivertown mall. The combination of chinese, japanese, and grand rapids sensibilities leaves this reviewer feeling like a snob wishing it was something else.
(3)Nathan W.
Not your typical Chinese food. Half the building is Japanese and half is Chinese. I was pretty impressed with lunch. The atmosphere is nice and the dining room is quiet.
(4)Scott S.
A sort of awkward mix of Japanese and Chinese cuisine with two separate menus. I wanted a meal at one of the hibachi tables, but my wife ended up ordering from the Chinese menu, so she sat with me and two other couples while the chef did his circus act. The food was okay and not overpriced, but the chef's skills were mediocre; much of the food ended up on the floor or in the trash. Also, his canned jokes were not very funny. It would probably be better for a larger group who would hopefully get assigned to one of their better chefs.
(3)Tab B.
Its been some time now but I was not too impressed with Ichiban. I hope they have improved since. When we went for dinner, the first let down was the "miso" soup which was not. It definitely tasted like lipton onion soup. Unfortunately, this set the tone for our dinner. We had shrimp for appetizer but the same shrimps were serve with the main entree. It was nice to see the servers wearing kimono but their demeanor was not the best. I want Ichiban to succeed as a tepanyaki restaurant and would like them to be at par with those in big cities since they are creating that expectation. If you are happy with your experience then thats what matters. We were not so b/c we have experienced better.
(2)Chad S.
awesome atmosphere. great sushi chef. suprisingly reasonable prices. Ate at the chinese and sushi side. Can't wait to come back to try the japanese side next :)

It is important to note that this is, for me, as good as it gets for Chinese food. Every other Chinese restaurant has to live up to this one. They don't. I don't go here for the Hibachi, which I have had and was wonderful and entertaining. I don't care for sushi but I do love the Chinese side of the restaurant. I do see lots of people impressed with the sushi, it's just not my thing. By far the BEST crab Rangoon I have ever had in my life. They are best when fresh of course, and don't have a major crabby flavor, (which suits me) lots of garlicy-chive flavor. My friend and I call it food sex because we can't hardly speak while we are eating them and mostly make groaning and moaning sounds. It's not as creepy as it sounds, promise. Egg rolls are great too and the staff is pretty friendly and will often just bring you things to try for the fun of it. I love the General's chicken, my go to for any Chinese place but I must ask for broccoli as it only comes with peppers in it. The chicken legitimately looks like chicken breast and has wonderful flavor. I have tried other dishes but nothing is like my meal of choice. Occasionally I will get Chicken Fried Rice which is great and lasts for several meals. Everything lasts for several meals because I tend to fill up on Rangoon and egg rolls. Clearly. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant and there is only one other place I will even agree to eat at. I will not ever eat at a Chinese buffet, nothing is more disgusting than a buffet, especially a Chinese buffet. I need you to know how serious I am about loving this restaurant.

Had a caucasian chef one of the times I went and he pretended he was terrible to the point we were like, "uuhhhh, why'd we get the white guy...." then he was like, BOW!!!! THIS WHAT YOU CAME FOR and went ballistic. Gave us a good laugh and he was one of the better hibachi chefs I've been in front of. Nice wait staff as well along with the great food.

Stopped in here Saturday night for a "bite" to eat. Ended up ordering the TNT roll, jalapeño roll, crab cheese, eggrolls, hot and sour soup, beef lo mein and I think that's it! The service was amazing! The sushi rolls were some of the best I've had in a long time! I'm eating the leftover lo mein right now and it's even better! Great service and great food!

Best Chinese in town, Love the orange flavored beef...

A friend and I decided to try Ichiban's sushi. BIG mistake! Ordered 2 differant kinds, one with tuna in it and one with crab in it. Picked up the sushi at lunch and brought it back to the office and just at sight should of known it wansn't going to turn out well. Didn't look fresh at all. Opened the packages and it had a very distinct fishy smell. Sushi should not smell fishy at all. We still decided that we would try a bite. We really wanted sushi. After one bite my friend and I both agreed something just wasn't right. It tasted horrible! I decided to call Ichiban and make them aware that their product was not fresh and tasted bad. They were rude to me on the phone and treated me like I was just trying to get a free meal. He asked me if I had every had sushi before and maybe I just didn't know what sushi was suppose to taste like. I told him I have had sushi many of times and certainly know what sushi is suppose to taste like. He said there was nothing wrong with their fish and they have been making sushi for 8 years and they know what they are doing. He suggested I try something else, and I said can I get my money back or a discount on a new order of something else? He said no, so I said ok I will never be ordering anything from your restaurant again nor will anyone I know. Don't order SUSHI from Ichban ever! Worst sushi and horrible customer service!

I always have a great experience with the Chinese takeout they offer. They always add complimentary soup and Rangoons and their almond boneless chicken is excellent! And the owner is always extremely nice and welcoming! I highly recommend the chinese takeout. Haven't tried the Japanese steakhouse side yet.

I'll start with the best part of my habachi experience. The waitstaff and service was exceptional, our waitress was very kind and courteous and she catered to my party very we'll. The chef, I forgot his name but he is a younger gentleman from Washington state, was great. He was skillful and energetic and despite a few fumbles (but you can't blame him for missing one of the eggs he threw 5 feet in the air) was skilled at habachi. He was really great with my younger cousin; knotting the napkin to look like a duck for her. Details like that made him a great chef. Despite the great service, I wasn't a huge fan of the food in all, the fried rice was phenomenal, one of the best I've had. I mixed it with the appetizer shrimp for a shrimp fried rice. I think the lobster could've been very good if it wasn't for the huge glob of egg yoke batter on top. Way too much for the amount of lobster I got. The steak Was good Cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. However there was just way too much of it. The quality of the steak was mediocre, nothing special. The ratio of steak to lobster was a little off, would've liked less steak and more lobster. The onion/cucumber medley that came at the end was pretty unnecessary, we were all full by then and I was only able to take a couple bites. And I could've done without it all together it was bland and just huge chunks of onion and cucumber. I'd recommend this place, but just know coming in what you are going to get, great service, good entertainment and decent food. What you pay for is the experience, not the food.
(3)Jenna J.
I want to make this place 7 stars but I can't. The atmosphere is pleasing and calm. The staff is super friendly and the food is so delicious... Especially the hibachi!
(5)Jon K.
We had a big group of 12 with reservations at 6:00 pm and sat down right away. Our chef, Daniel-San, was fabulous! He was entertaining and cooked a great meal! I had the filet and it was delicious. The vegetables were cooked to perfection. Thank you for making my daughters birthday so special
(4)Jenny W.
All I have to say is NO yum yum sauce and an up charge for fried rice....not impressed.
(3)Frank F.
My best choice of Chinese food in GRC area. I am from China. Hibachi lobster and fried rice are great and I have never missed the throwing shrimps. Frank@Weiming.
(5)Tiffany H.
This place is amazing, the food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is very unique. It's both a great dining and a cultural experience.

We've been here before and it was okay, but after last night we will NOT be back. We sat on the hibachi side, I ordered the lobster and steak and my boyfriend had the seafood combo. Everything was good until I took one bite of my lobster...I spit it out immediately as it tasted really fishy. My boyfriend ate his and said it was OK, just tough. I then got my steak and ate a few pieces but was wary at that point and just stuck to the rice for the rest of the meal. We told the manager and he just got defensive, telling us he checked the meat in the cooler and it was fine. Offered us more lobster but that was the last thing I wanted at that point! Fast forward a few hours and my boyfriend is vomiting at 1am. The next morning he ate one piece of the steak (we thought it was just the lobster, the steak smelled okay) and gave a piece to my dog and they both immediately vomited it up. Sorry to be a bit graphic but what the heck! He called the owner/manager just to let him know (so more people wouldn't get sick!) and was again met with defensiveness "well you're the only ones who have complained." I understand if it was just a fluke, but the management's reaction and poor customer service is the primary reason they have lost our business!
(1)Amy Y.
This rating is only for the hibachi. Went with a large group, filling up 2 hibachi grills. Service was wonderful and they were very accommodating, even with our party arriving at different times and moving seats. The food and hibachi on the other hand was mediocre at best :/ Wasn't much for entertainment value as the chefs just cooked the food, not much interaction with the customers, and food was pricier too. Probably won't go back for hibachi here again.
(3)Mr M.
I have only eaten at this restaurant during lunch but the food was very good with big portions and very reasonable pricing.
(4)Ron T.
Brought the family here today for a late lunch. First off, I have a hard time with wait staff who think they are your best friend. Our waitress pulled up a chair and started to ask for our order. Then she started asking lots of personal questions like: how old are you, bet I can guess what you like, and other inappropriate stuff. When I finally ordered I got the hot/sour soup. Unfortunately it was not even up to temperature -- it was luke-warm at best. When my General Tso chicken came you could tell it was old because the inside was barely warm and the breading tasted old. Very disappointing. Waited forever for our waitress to come back and check on us. I will not be back again for a while. There are too many other fine restaurants in GR to waste my time here at Ichiban. I DO NOT recommend.
(2)Mark V.
Pad Thai is not their thing, it was terrible. I asked for no meat in my noodles and there was chicken. Great egg rolls and soup. I do enjoy the hibachi here but it is not as good as others restaurants I've been to. Tootsie Rolls as you leave? Ok.
(2)Rob D.
So we went here on the recommendation of a friend who has been to other locations for this restaurant. The service was very good. We ate in the Chinese and sushi side so I can't speak to the hibachi side. Although I did enjoy our food which was a sushi roll each and general chicken and cashew chicken, the menu could be improved. We picked two sushi rolls that we have had in the past simply because outside of the chefs species there is no description of the sushi rolls. So unless you have had it before bring a phone to figure out what's in the non-descriptive names of your sushi. My general chicken was good however the cashew chicken lacked in flavor. Again the service was very good and prompt but I was disappointed that we couldn't order more sushi without already knowing what's what. May go again.
(3)Angela J.
Just ok. Seems like most of the great reviews are non-hibachi. We ate on the hibachi side. Our chef was certainly talented, but not much of a showman. Maybe he was tired or overworked? I heard other tables getting loud with excitement- so maybe it was just us. Food was ok. No white sauce, which was sad. Overall I realize I'm paying for the experience, which was less exciting and more expensive than any other hibachi place I've been to.
(3)Robin C.
Have always loved this place but lunch this time was a different story. Service was excellent as usual but the food not good. Had the Mongolian beef and it was so tough it was next to impossible to eat. Another person in the party had the beef and broccoli and stated the same thing, very tough. Guess I'll have to stick with the chicken.

I want to make this place 7 stars but I can't. The atmosphere is pleasing and calm. The staff is super friendly and the food is so delicious... Especially the hibachi!

All I have to say is NO yum yum sauce and an up charge for fried rice....not impressed.

My best choice of Chinese food in GRC area. I am from China. Hibachi lobster and fried rice are great and I have never missed the throwing shrimps. Frank@Weiming.

I have only eaten at this restaurant during lunch but the food was very good with big portions and very reasonable pricing.

Pad Thai is not their thing, it was terrible. I asked for no meat in my noodles and there was chicken. Great egg rolls and soup. I do enjoy the hibachi here but it is not as good as others restaurants I've been to. Tootsie Rolls as you leave? Ok.

Awesome place, the best asian cuisine in Grand Rapids. They cook right in front of you, and the cooks are very personable! If you like Hibachi, you need to check this place out!

Great value, excellent food, professional wait staff. You just can't go wrong here. Highly recommended.

Not your typical Chinese food. Half the building is Japanese and half is Chinese. I was pretty impressed with lunch. The atmosphere is nice and the dining room is quiet.

We were not so b/c we have experienced better.

awesome atmosphere. great sushi chef. suprisingly reasonable prices.

(5)Scott S.
